Yesterday was 9/11. 16 years ago. It was such a terrible day that it still seems like it was just a few weeks ago. But my daughter wasn’t even born yet, and so many things that have happened since seem like such a long time ago. I was in a different job and drive different cars. Today is new iPhone day, but the iPhone wasn’t even invented yet in 2001. In fact, it was still 6 years off. So much has changed in the world and with us, but that horrible day still feels fresh somehow. Is that what is was like for that other generation after Pearl Harbor and WWII?
The kid got her learners permit recently. It had been hanging over us like a cloud all summer, but as the date got closer to when she could take her test she buckled down and studied. There are all these apps now that she used to take practice tests over and over. She kept at it until she was getting them all right. She did a great job studying and now brings up things that she learned when we are driving around. Our dmv day went like you could imagine. Long waits and a lot of crazy people everywhere.
We joked that the dmv didn’t disappoint. The experience makes you want to go there as little as possible in your life. But she passed the test with flying colors and a few days later got her permit in the mail. We haven’t been out behind the wheel yet. Like most of her generation, she’s not real interested in driving. My dad is more excited than all of us. He can not wait to get her out on the road. Or parking lot. The kid? Meh. We’ll have to get out there soon, though, so she has some experience before her behind the wheel at school starts.
Boys, driving, college. It’s all lurking out there…
Another thing lurking out there is another hurricane. Jose. So now this one may affect us? It’s possible, but the official forecasts seem to keep it off our shores. We’ll see. It would be nice to get through the season not having to deal with the destruction Texas and Florida have gone through lately, or have to go through all the flooding we did last year. Plus, there are football games to go to coming up. You got to have your priorities…
So, the girls in the family have spent the summer watching Four Weddings on TLC. This in lead up to our own wedding experience in August for my cousin. My daughter hadn’t been to a wedding since she was little, so she was all excited to put all her Four Weddings judgement to use in real life. Well, we all had a good time at the wedding and the kid got lots of reference points to compare to all the craziness she sees on tv. Then a few weeks ago, we unexpectedly got to witness another wedding. We were making a stop at our favorite brewery before tailgating for the first ODU football game of the season when a wedding broke out right in front of us.
We gave her a 9 out of 10 for the pretty dress and a 10 out of 10 for the venue, but had to give a bad rating for the food – because they didn’t invite us to try any!
