It’s daylight savings day spring forward, but instead of a jump into spring it seems we have fallen back into winter. Cold today. Cold yesterday. Cold again tomorrow. At least we aren’t having the snow they are getting up north. I think this daylight savings thing is too early now. It used to start in April when it actually felt like spring. So we get an extra hour at night of daylight, but what are we going to do with it? It’s March! You don’t need daylight to watch college basketball. Plus, gaining the hour of daylight in the evening means losing an hour of daylight in the morning, which makes mornings even more depressing. If we waited another month before this shift it would be warmer out to enjoy the extra sunlight and not effect the mornings so much. Of course we could just get rid of it all together, but it still being light out until almost 9pm in the summer is pretty cool. Especially if there are waves…
The kid went off on a sleepover the other night and her and her friend went to a movie the next day by themselves. This was her 3rd sleepover in the past month and she has another one coming up. She is really turning into the social butterfly. She is so big and confident and in that stage where she has all these friends and all they do is text each other all day and night. At least it’s better than in my day when it meant needing to be on the one phone in the house all the time. Now texting and text games and FaceTime. For some reason the kid has never been into shopping and going to the mall, but it looks like that has changed because yesterday she gets home from her movie and looks at us and declares – I feel like going shopping. Lets go to the mall! – so off the girls went. It’s full blown teenager time.
The other day I saw a real life cartoon sequence while sitting in traffic waiting for the light to turn green. There was this dump truck in front of me and I happened to see a large rat scurry under it from the side of the street. The light turned green and we all started to go and there it was – the rat – running for it’s life, zig zagging left and right trying desperately to dodge tires and cars. I slowed down and veered around it and took off. I don’t know if it made it, but it looked just like a tom and jerry scene.
Lots of nostalgia going on for us this June. It’s going to be a month of retro fun. First up, Jerry Seinfeld is coming to do a show early in the month. My wife and I have seen him a bunch of times but not in a while. This time we are going to take the kid. She is old enough now and is a fan after our binge viewing of the show the past year. We have also all watched a few of his Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee episodes together. I’ve been watching those recently while running on the treadmill and occasionally get the girls to check an episode out. Next on the list, a week later, is Bryan Adams. The wife and I are going back to the 80’s for a date night to the little amphitheater in Portsmouth to check out the concert. I saw him a few times back in high school and college and he was always great. Finally, later in the month we are traveling north to go see U2 in Philadelphia. It is on Father’s Day the weekend after school lets out for the summer. It’s their 30 year anniversary Joshua Tree tour where they will be playing the classic album in its entirety. They will no doubt be playing new songs too from their upcoming album, but for U2 this is about as nostalgic as it gets. We’ll also be spending some time at our family cottage in Ocean City, NJ where I spent a lot of time hanging out as a kid playing on the boardwalk. It should be a great start of the summer.
Speaking of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, Louis CK did an episode where he told this story of taking his daughters out on his yacht for the first time. While he told it, the story played out with animation. It was so funny. Here it is, check it out…
