I haven’t been keeping up this blogging thing like I planned. Part of the problem is that during the summer I don’t have hardly any alone time to think and write these things. We stay up late and are always doing things. That just leaves during work, and writing a blog is probably not the best use of my time at work. Then once you haven’t written in a while it’s hard to know where to begin again. So much has happened that it seems overwhelming to try to catch up. Well, lets try to start it up again now that the summer is over and the rest of the family needs to go to bed earlier. Plus there are the two hours of the kid’s orchestra rehearsal each week, which….
The kid’s orchestra rehearsals started tonight! A new orchestra at a new location. She moved up to the Concert Orchestra and just told me during the break that she is in 1st violin. That is pretty amazing. We thought that when you step up into a more advance orchestra that you automatically get put into 2nd violin and then had to work your way into 1st. I guess her audition went even better than we thought! One bummer, though. It doesn’t look like I will get to watch them rehearse like I have the past few years. They are playing in the band room, so it’s the cafeteria or the car for me. Being able to watch is fascinating because you get to see the progress over time and get to learn how conductors teach and motivate. The kid says they already sound real good on the first night, though.
We just had a crazy drinking weekend full of crazy drinking. Seriously. It was crazy. On Friday the kid got asked to a high school football game by this boy she volunteers with at the animal shelter. It was not at her school, of course, but at one near our Town Center, so it was date night for the parents. We started out drinking beer, and having dinner, at Gordon Biersch. After a couple high octane GB concoctions we left and made our way over to a martini bar for some non beers. A martini and a negroni to be exact. Very trendy. At this point the kid still wasn’t ready to be picked up so we continued to the next destination – another beer place with a ton to choose from. We settled on a couple of favorites until it was finally time to go rescue the kid.
The next day I was feeling a little shaky, but it was Busch Gardens day. The weather was perfect and they were having a Bier Fest. More beer. Ugh. First, though, the long treacherous drive to Williamsburg. Ugh. Then some rides to ease the shakiness. Ugh. Finally, more beer. And more beer. Because in heaven there is no beer, which is why you have to drink it here…
Finally, Sunday was here, which is a day of rest, right? Nope. Sunday is a day of wine. It was time for the Neptune Festival Wine Tasting, and we had tickets from work – and another perfect day to enjoy. So off to the beach we went! Lots of wine and cider and sangria. You can taste the oak barrels in this one. And the steel barrels from this one. There’s the hint of cinnamon and blackberries – and how about this watermelon wine? I think we went a little overboard on this one. Well, the whole weekend actually. I know I’m done with the drinking for a while. Well, at least until this Saturday when it’s tailgating time for the big ODU vs UNC home football game.
Speaking of big days, tomorrow is a big day. The big Apple iPhone and more announcement. New phones! New watch! New software! New surprises? It will be time for an extended lunch to check it all out…
