A few weeks ago we had a real life full on blizzard. Right here in beach town Virginia. The – keeps you up at night heavy winds and snow with all kinds of things hitting your roof and windows all night – kind of storm. With every gust roaring down the street and through our trees out back came the thought – will this be the one that knocks out the power or finally puts a tree on our roof? Well, even with Mother Nature’s best effort the power never went out, but we did suffer a casualty.

A big chunk of our front tree came crashing down, barely missing my truck. Or, more accurately, not quite missing it, because a portion of the tree dented the rear fender. But most of it missed, and there were no broken windows and no calls to the insurance company. Lots of snow, though, and super cold temperatures which lasted for days. This led to six straight days off from school and a lot of cabin fever. Once everything melted and things were almost back to normal, it snowed again. This time closing school for one day. Lets hope that was the end of the white stuff for this winter.
While going through some pictures for another blog I’ve been working on, I found a photo of my wife and our old dog shortly after moving into our house 18 years ago. It shows our front tree as a youngster, ironically also after a snowfall. It’s amazing how big the tree got over all those years. How our dog was a puppy then and now has been gone already for a few years. Our daughter wasn’t born yet and is now a sophomore in high school. Time sure does fly…

In an attempt to fight against the cold, snowy winter, we all decided to run an 8k in March. The Shamrock on St. Patrick’s Day. So the training is on. The kid has never run this far before, but is really into it. She’s been doing her runs on the treadmill and around the block. We’ve tried to get her into running before with mixed results. She completed a 5k, but getting her to train was like pulling teeth. Now she is all in, so we are running with it. I’ve run a bunch of 5 and 8k before and try to keep in semi good running shape. My wife has run a couple of half marathons, but hasn’t been in a race longer than a 5k in a while, so she is ready to get back into it. So far so good, but less than two months to go. We are hoping that this will lead to us doing a couple more races this year. Most notably, the Castaway Cay 5k during our Disney cruise this summer, and the Wicked 10k Halloween weekend.

Tonight we were listening to songs when our 15 year old daughter asked us if we would like to hear her favorite Elton John song. That doesn’t happen everyday. It was a great one, though.
