We are big Adele fans in our family. We even took a road trip a year and a half ago to see her in concert in Philly. The result of a surprise Christmas present. It was so great. Emotional, funny, fresh, and a whole lot of fun. Definitely worth the trip to experience.
We refer back to that night a lot in our house…
One song of Adele’s that has caught my ear from her latest album is Million Years Ago. The song is a powerhouse and she sings it with great emotion. Since first hearing it, though, I was sure that it was a remake. It was so familiar. I kept thinking that up until yesterday when my daughter played it in the car. We talked about how great the song is and whether she sang it when we saw her in concert. Then I mentioned how the song was a remake. My daughter was like – no it’s not. I looked it up and Adele wrote it. I thought, hmmmm. So last night I did some digging.
Well, it seems to be well documented online that Million Years Ago sounds an awful lot like Yesterday, When I was Young by Dusty Springfield. Sure enough, it really does…
So that’s why it sounded so familiar. While I can’t find anything official from Adele, I’d like to think that she wrote Million Years Ago as a tribute to Dusty Springfield. Adele has said that she is a big fan of Dusty, their singing styles are similar, and Million Years Ago actually has in the lyrics – When I was young. It all seems too on point to be an accident and too obvious to be a blatant copy. What do you think? Either way, they’re both great songs and amazing singers. Now, about that song Hello….
