It’s March 12th and it’s snowing outside. The never ending winter has us right in its grip, and it’s getting old. I have such nice memories of going to the CAA Basketball Championships in Richmond every year in early March, back when such a thing still existed, and it was Spring. Spring! That trip usually meant warm weather and flowers and March Madness. This year the Madness is that it is snowing outside.
This day started with the third nor’easter in the past few weeks blowing through with the promise of some snow maybe mixing in tonight. A dusting to an inch of snow on the grassy areas was possible. Well, it’s now tonight and after traveling all the way to Norfolk for my daughter’s orchestra rehearsal in torrential rain and wind, it is now snowing its butt off. It looks like they are going to end rehearsals early so we can attempt to drive home in the mess awaiting us.
The winter didn’t start out all that bad. A fairly warm December gave us hope that winter may miss us this year. Then January hit – and a foot of snow during a blizzard and temperatures in the teens and 20’s for days. School closed for over a week. Ice and mess everywhere. Then another snow storm and a couple more inches and more cold. Winter definitely didn’t miss us this year.
February got here with deep dread, because of all the months in our area for snow and ice, February was usually the worst. But the opposite happened. We had nice weather! Weekends in the 70’s! Sun! Omg, winter was over! Well that was just a slap in the face. It got cold and rainy and overcast. All of March has been miserable so far. Did I mention that it is snowing out right now?
And guess what? We are running in a St Patrick’s Day 8k this Saturday at the beach. The forecast is a high of 47, but it may only be in the high 30’s that morning. Yay. As if running 5 miles at sunrise wasn’t bad enough. At least there will be beer at the end of it…
